Had a close call the other day so I thought I'd share it with you all and see if anyone else had any stories to share. Maybe we can all learn a thing or two from each others close call experiences on the bike.
Mine:
Heading towards a slight curve right turn at a three way intersection. It's a two lane street, and I'm in the number 1 lane on the far left, taking the outside of the curve because there was a pickup truck to the right of me in the 2 lane. I made sure to stay just slightly ahead of him so he could see where I was in the turn. There were two cars about 2 full car lengths ahead of me already in the turn.
As I hit the turn, I hear sirens. I look up to see where they're coming from, and sure enough it's a paramedic truck blaring down the road, about to cut into my lane and take the turn the opposite direction. The idiot in the first car of the two cars ahead of, in his/her infinite wisdom, decides to just slam on it's brakes rather than easily pull into the 2 lane, where he/she had plenty of room. This causes car 2 to stop violently fast, and leaves me, going about 30mph, in a curve, with two stopped cars and a paramedic truck heading straight for me, and a truck directly to my right. What option do I have here?
Immediately I clutched in, front braked and dropped about two gears, blipping and engine braking as much as possible in between shifts, and then introduced the back brake. Only, I didn't just introduce it, I locked it up. So now my rear tire is sliding and I'm fishtailing slightly. I managed to slow down enough, fishtail and control the locked up tire enough to stand the bike up, look right, see a gap and quickly burst over.
Made it out without a scratch..
Anyone else?
